MEDIA RELEASE

13 JANUARY, 2012

“Darryl Stewart to Stand for Council”
Named a Fraser Coast Hero after his leadership role in the fight against Traveston Crossing Dam, Darryl Stewart will stand for election to Fraser Coast Regional Council as Councillor for Division 2. Whilst holding down a full time job, Mr. Stewart has continued his work for the Fraser Coast community for the last 4 years by volunteering his services to both the Council appointed Economic Development Advisory Group and Environmental Advisory Committee, as well as his long term Presidency role with the Tiaro and District Chamber of Commerce.
Committee talk-fests with little Council action have been very frustrating for someone accustomed to weighing up the facts and then making decisions. After being NSW State Manager for a national and international smallgoods manufacturer with full responsibility for production, sales and marketing from a factory with around 330 employees, Mr. Stewart operated his own livestock farming business at Mungar for 18 years. Mr. Stewart will bring proven and experienced leadership and a strong, verifiable business and financial background to Council.
In addition, Mr. Stewart has been appointed to international, national and state panels and task forces in livestock and meat production, and natural resource management, working with all levels of government and industry. He is currently an executive member of the Board of Directors of the Burnett Mary Regional Group for Natural Resource Management as well as the Chair of its Governance Committee.
“While having a strong interest in the sustainable preservation and protection of our unique natural resources, my roots are in primary production and I am well aware of the needs of primary producers and the vital importance of producing Australian food for Australians,” he said.
“The present Council may have amalgamated the previous 4 Councils but it certainly has not amalgamated the Fraser Coast,” he said. “We must forget we ever had 4 previous Councils and Council areas. They are gone forever. All of us are now part of “Fraser Coast Country”. From Boompa to Burrum and Boonaroo, from Eurong and Urangan to Urah, from Tinana, Teebar, Tinnanbar and Tiaro, each one of our residents must feel that they are part of a united community.”
Mr. Stewart explained that the regional and rural areas are the economic powerhouse of the Fraser Coast and generate most of its primary income. “We do not expect special treatment, but we certainly expect our Council to support us equally and fairly in relation to our city cousins,” he said. ““We are rich in resources, both natural and developed, we have major lifestyle and tourist potential from our country to our coastal areas just wanting and waiting to be promoted to contribute fully to the recognition of the Fraser Coast as a wonderful place to live, work and play. Why have our current Fraser Coast authorities ignored us?”
“My business will be your business. Business, both large and small, provides the impetus that will position the Fraser Coast for a sustainable future. Council is a business that must perform like any other business. If I am elected, I will ensure that our region is open for business,” he said. “We must develop and we must grow, but that growth and development must be sustainable economically, environmentally and socially and it is the duty of Council to ensure it happens equitably across the whole Fraser Coast region.”
“Council is a balancing act between providing efficient and “value for money” services to current ratepayers all over the Fraser Coast and facilitating new initiatives to encourage the continued growth of our region,” said Mr. Stewart. “Council must be a shining example of the principles of good governance and good government.”
Leadership, action, a clear and dynamic vision of a united, sustainable and growing region, and true community representation will be core Council business for the former Tiaro and District Citizen of the Year.

“I am encouraged to stand because I believe that our rural and regional Division 2 needs strong representation as part of a Council that must have massive change,” said Mr. Stewart. “I believe that Division 2 is by far the biggest and the best and has by far the greatest future potential as it contains a smorgasbord of everything the Fraser Coast has to offer from urban to regional and from rural to coastal.”
“I am not at all interested in playing any political games and I will not be accepting any campaign donations from developers or their associates just as I will not be making pre-election promises I cannot keep,” he said. “My entire focus will be to ensure that our “Fraser Coast Country” receives at least its fair share of external assistance, that ratepayers receive value for their money and that all residents share in our vibrant future.”
”Unfortunately there are many idle statements made, and divisional politicking done, before an election,” said Mr. Stewart. “However I know the electors of the Fraser Coast will sort the prime hard wheat from the lightweight chaff in choosing to elect 10 Councillors who will “walk the walk” so that the new Council can get on with business for us all.”
“I have already shown that I am prepared to fight for our lifestyles, livelihoods and landscapes by standing up for the whole Fraser Coast in the fight against the State proposed Traveston Crossing Dam,” he said. “I am not afraid to stand up and be counted again.”
